Overview

Course Description

In this advanced clinical training program, you will study the core frameworks necessary to excel as a clinical pharmacist in acute hospital and ICU settings. The curriculum progresses logically from establishing a systematic patient follow-up routine—using comprehensive clinical evaluation forms—to navigating premium evidence-based resources like UpToDate, Lexicomp, Micromedex, and KDIGO guidelines. You will gain the confidence to integrate these vital tools directly into daily ward rounds and critical care assessments, ensuring you deliver the highest standard of pharmaceutical care.

Beyond foundational knowledge, you will dive deep into advanced laboratory interpretation, learning how to clinically evaluate CBCs, coagulation profiles, cardiac enzymes, and arterial blood gases (ABGs). The course emphasizes practical decision-making through complex, real-world case studies. You will master intricate renal and hepatic dose adjustments, applying the Jelliffe equation for patients with unstable renal function and the Child-Pugh score for those with liver impairment.

Finally, you will learn how to safeguard patient outcomes and streamline hospital workflows by utilizing clinical checklists like the FASTHUG BID MAIDENS mnemonic. This systematic approach ensures you can expertly identify medication errors, manage Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) and stress ulcer prophylaxis, and formulate precise, daily clinical recommendations that elevate your entire healthcare team's standard of care.

Why Is This Course Essential?

  • Prevents Adverse Drug Events: You will learn to proactively identify and resolve critical medication errors using the MAIDENS checklist and continuous medication reconciliation upon admission and discharge.
  • Optimizes High-Risk Dosing: By mastering complex calculations for unstable renal function (such as the Jelliffe equation) and liver impairment, you reduce the risk of drug toxicity in vulnerable ICU patients.
  • Streamlines Clinical Decision-Making: You will seamlessly integrate evidence-based platforms like MDCalc, GlobalRPh, and IDSA guidelines into fast-paced hospital workflows.
  • Enhances Patient Safety Profiles: Implementing evidence-based preventative measures, such as DVT prophylaxis using Caprini and Padua scores, directly improves patient survival and recovery rates.
  • Accelerates Career Progression: Transitioning from theoretical knowledge to practical, ward-ready skills empowers you to become an indispensable, trusted member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
